September Assignments--IB Physics 2
2015-16 School Year

Tuesday, Sept. 1
1st day of school!
Welcome to class! Seating chart was made available--subject to change throughout this week :)

Journal:  Which of the learner profile characteristics do you think best describe you?  Why?  Which of the learner profile characteristics would you like to work on this year as an improvement goal? Why? How will you do this?

In-Class:  Physicist icebreaker; IB learner profile discussion; Student survey (if time permits--could be done at home)

Student Survey Instructions:
  • Go to www.socrative.com
  • enter the class SHSPhysicsRocks
  • Complete the survey :)
  • If you don't have time tonight to do so, it's okay--this is due by Thursday's class

HW:
Register for WebAssign (find the class key HERE) no later than Tuesday, September 8
Add this class to your turnitin.com account (class ids HERE) no later than Tuesday, September 8
complete student survey (see above for directions)--due Thursday
Complete Journal entry (due tomorrow)

Journal Expectations--entries (all year long) will be written in a composition book.  Each entry must include the following:  The date written; the question/prompt written clearly; your answer written clearly and completely; Draw a horizontal line after the journal entry to separate it from the next one.
Wednesday
Sept. 2

Journal #2:  no journal in-class; HW = journal entry--see below

In-Class:  Get textbook; Discussion on Respectful Student Discourse;

HW:    Think about the last 3 questions for the discussion we started today.  In your journal, jot down some ideas to help jump start the discussion around prompts to ask for clarification, ask for evidence, and to add on to a classmate's idea.
Here's the presentation with some guiding questions that we'll be talking about in class tomorrow

Thursday, Sept. 3
Finish discussion on respectful/productive student discourse
Review of topics covered last year

Friday, Sept. 4
Warm-up:  List things that you use or see that exhibit rotational motion

In-Class:  intro to rotational motion; journal entry related to rotational motion of a record player

Presentation used (ppt)

HW:  skim pages 549-551 in your textbook; review assessment statements related to UCM.  If you have not yet done so, please register for WebAssign.

Monday, Sept. 7
No School--Labor Day

Tuesday, Sept. 8
Notes/Discussion:  Rotational Kinematics
Whiteboard group practice problems

HW:  WA--B.1 Angular mechanics --Due Friday, 9/11/15

Wednesday

Sept. 9

Warm-up:  "practice question #2" from notes

In-class:  Mini-lab--Angular and Tangential Velocity of a Rotating Bar

Collect data and work on analysis in class
Analysis questions/calculations due at the beginning of class tomorrow

Thursday

 Sept. 10

Warm-up time:  self-correct mini lab from yesterday

Digital textbook checked out--if you got one, please remember to return to Ms. Eide by Friday 9/18

Practice Problems:  Angular velocity, angular acceleration, and tangential speeds

Friday, Sept. 11
Quiz:  Rotational Kinematics

Notes--intro to Torque

Monday, Sept. 14
Notes/discussion: Torque
- Video demo:  hinged stick
- Video demo: pennies on a stick (journal entry--predict, then explain after watching)
- in-person demo:  Torque Bar

revisit questions from Friday--this time with answers

HW:  bring a can/canister of food (that can be donated when we're done with it) that you think will roll and reach the bottom of a ramp the fastest.  --bring to class tomorrow! :)

Tuesday, Sept. 15
Practice problems:  Torque

Wednesday
Sept. 16
Through the Wormhole: Are we Alone?
(2nd period in a senior meeting all period--no class)

Thursday Sept. 17
Can roll-off :)
Observation sheet for rolling competition are due no later than tomorrow at the beginning of class

Friday, Sept. 18
Computers available to work on the WebAssign questions--due Monday

Congrats to Isaac's can of V-8--the grand champion of the IB Physics roll-off!

Extra credit static equilibrium project--due October 9

Monday, Sept. 21
Quiz:  Torque, net torque, and static equilibrium
Pre-assessment:  Data based question

Tuesday, Sept. 22
Lab, pt. 1:  Adventures in Torque--equilibrium
analysis for pt. 1 due tomorrow (you should have time in class to finish)
HW:  Finish lab
HW:  552-554 (or re-read it if you've already read it :) )

Wednesday, Sept. 23
Lab, Pt. 2:  Static equilibrium with non-parallel forces (torques)

Thursday, Sept. 24
Lab, pt. 2, continued.  when done, continue to...
Lab, pt. 3:  Adventures in Torque:  Newton's 2nd law for rotational motion
Part 3 Goal:  Determine the relationship between the net applied torque and the angular acceleration of a rotating disc.

Friday, Sept. 25
Lab, pt. 3, continued

lab analysis for parts 1 and 2 are the questions on the lab sheet  these will be collected on Monday.
